As someone who enjoys watching films of various genres, including action, thriller, business, and drama, I often pay attention to anything related to architecture, be it the main theme, the profession of the main characters, or even details like the filming location for a scene. It is not uncommon for a film to feature a scene set in a house whose architecture, in my opinion, is both unique and modern. Therefore, I have compiled a list of modern and unique houses that have appeared, whether briefly or prominently, in various films.
Ennis House by Frank Lloyd Wright (House on Haunted Hill, 1959)
The Ennis House is a residence located in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, USA, south of Griffith Park. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Charles and Mabel Ennis in 1923 and constructed in 1924, the exotic form of this building has made it an attractive location for Hollywood filmmakers. The house gained initial fame after appearing in House on Haunted Hill and later featured in The Day of the Locust, Blade Runner, and the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The Ben Rose House by A. James Speyer (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 1986)
Designed by modernist architect A. James Speyer, a disciple of Mies van der Rohe, The Ben Rose House was featured in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off and designated as a landmark in 1987. Constructed in 1953, the house, made of glass boxes and steel structures reminiscent of Rohe's Farnsworth House, is located on the outskirts of Chicago in Highland Park.
Sheats-Goldstein Residence by John Lautner (The Big Lebowski, 1998)
Designed by John Lautner in 1963, the Sheats-Goldstein Residence appeared in the film The Big Lebowski. Situated on a sandstone hillside, Sheats/Goldstein is intended to emulate the philosophy of a cave. The uniqueness of the house lies in the unfinished concrete triangular-patterned ceiling of its living room. The house also appeared in the films Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and Bandit.
Alex Wyler’s House (The Lake House, 2006)
A modern house covering an area of 190 square meters, featuring a glass box design and a raised platform concept, located above a lake with minimalist steel materials characteristic of architect Mies van der Rohe. Unfortunately, the house, specifically built for the film, was dismantled after the completion of filming due to local government regulations prohibiting residences in a lake that is part of a protected forest in northern USA.
The Sherman Residence (Fracture, 2007)
The Sherman Residence appeared in the thriller film Fracture (2007), starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling. Located in San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, CA, this contemporary rural residence was designed by Peter Tolkin + Sara Lorenzen Architecture. Surrounded by nature, this 6,500-square-foot house consists of a series of pavilions constructed from concrete, wood, and glass, with a horse-shoe-shaped pavilion configuration maximizing views toward the landscape.
Hoke Residence by Skylab Architecture (Twilight, 2008)
Located on the outskirts of Portland, the Hoke Residence, designed by Skylab Architecture, serves as the home of Edward Cullen and his family in the film Twilight. This house combines modern and conventional technologies in its materials. With three floors, the Hoke Residence appears seamlessly integrated into and part of the surrounding forest area. The elongated cantilever terrace in the front area becomes a distinctive feature and accent of the house.
Villa Overby by John Robert Nilsson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 2011)
Designed by Swedish architect John Robert Nilsson, Villa Overby is situated in Varmdo, one of the small islands near Stockholm, Sweden. The house featured in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo boasts a contemporary design with a sleek form, constructed predominantly of ceiling-high glass. The interior is characterized by bright colors, while the exterior is adorned in black.
The Skyline Residence by Belzberg Architects (Crazy Stupid Love, 2011)
The Skyline Residence, designed by Belzberg Architects and showcased in Crazy Stupid Love, spans 1.5 hectares atop the Hollywood Hills, with a building area of approximately 5,800 square feet. The residence offers expansive open living spaces with clean lines, wooden floors, and gallery walls finished in white, enhancing the influx of natural light and creating an illusion of spaciousness. This $18 million home was acquired by Pharrell Williams in 2015.
Seoyeon's House (Architecture 101, 2012)
Situated on Jeju Island, this house featured in Architecture 101, starring Uhm Tae-Woong, Han Ga-In, Lee Je-Hoon, and Bae Suzy. What captivates about this house are its wide, tall windows that, when opened, reveal views of the Jeju Sea. Additionally, the roof of the house is repurposed as a garden. The house suffered severe damage from a typhoon, leading to its reconstruction and transformation into a café named "Cafe Seo Yeon," aligning with the character's name in the film.
The John Wick’s House by Narofsky Architecture/Ways2Design (John Wick, 2014)
Built in 2009 by Narofsky Architecture/Ways2Design, this house features as the residence of the main character in the film John Wick. Depicted as stark and cold in the movie, it serves as the backdrop for intense gunplay scenes. The house boasts a stunning interior, bathed in natural light and seamlessly connected to the exterior through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a lake. With a high-end, modern, and clean aesthetic, the interior perfectly complements John Wick's cool and classy character.
